UNESCO Patronage to IUMS 2026

Advancing Microbiology for a More Sustainable Future

The International Union of Microbiological Societies (IUMS) 2026 Biennial Congress has been granted the patronage of UNESCO, recognizing the important role microbiological sciences play in addressing global challenges and advancing sustainable development.

UNESCO’s patronage highlights the Congress’s contribution to international scientific dialogue and its commitment to fostering solutions that support environmental resilience, public health, food security, and sustainable innovation.

Bringing together researchers, policymakers, industry leaders, and public health experts from across the globe, IUMS 2026 will provide a unique platform to explore how microbiology can help shape a more sustainable future while strengthening international scientific collaboration.

Joint IUMS-UNESCO Sessions

As part of this recognition, UNESCO is supporting two dedicated joint IUMS-UNESCO sessions that will explore the growing role of microbial science in addressing some of society’s most pressing challenges.

Microbial Solutions for a Sustainable Planet

📅 Thursday, 5 November 2026           🕐13:05 – 14:05

The discussion will showcase global initiatives focused on advancing microbial solutions for a non-fossil carbon economy, strengthening food security, improving ecosystem resilience, and mitigating methane emissions. Participants will also explore how scientists, policymakers, funders, entrepreneurs, and advocacy groups can work together to transform scientific discoveries into practical solutions for a more sustainable future.

Panel Discussion:
Microbial Solutions for a Sustainable Planet

📅 Thursday, 5 November 2026           🕐16:40 – 17:40

Building upon the themes introduced earlier in the day, this panel discussion will explore the critical role of microbiology in addressing climate change and supporting sustainable development.
By bringing together leading experts from different sectors, the session will examine how microbial science can contribute to climate mitigation, food security, and a more sustainable future.

UNESCO’s patronage reflects the importance of microbiological sciences in supporting the objectives of sustainable development and strengthening international scientific cooperation.
